My Thoughts Always: Poverty Does Exist In America
I've read articles from people, probably not American, stating we don't truly have poverty here. That simply isn't true. Just recently a man was found near a popular shopping center in my region. He froze to death, he was homeless. He had no home to go to and I'm more than sure he stood at the corner of the lot stating he will work for food and shelter and I am equally sure he was snubbed quite a lot.I can easily say he was snubbed.
We lived in the projects, my husband worked at Wendy's, some man told my husband the world would be a better place if they tore them down, none of those people work. All of those people sell drugs and create trouble. We lived in the projects. We never sold drugs. We kept to ourselves. Sure, I'm a stay at home mom and my husband works but my kids are the ones you see that say "please, thank you, yes sir, and no sir." We were stigmatized just because we lived in the projects. Did you see "The Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock? I bet that football player who lived in the projects makes an awful lot of money.
When you treat people like they are below you, then they can never rise to the occasion and become more than what they are. This is true with anything work, education, the list can truly go on and on. I think this is why I have a thing for strays. A stray isn't a stray. A stray is simply someone who needs someone to believe in them.
Those who live without are always snubbed by those with. Before the health care thing, a man stated "I don't want to pay for anyone who caused harm to their body." Since I don't have insurance, except when I'm pregnant and I do suspect that's why those in poverty have so many children, I will use this as an example. If I find a lump what do you think the medical system will do? I would probably die leaving behind three young children. They would probably, loose the home we worked for, maybe land back in the projects and then you still end up paying the same amount it costs for my family to live even though my husband works.
I'm not jumping on my "platform" this is simply how my half of the world lives and it is real scary not knowing what's next. It's scary knowing that one little event can cost the future for my children. It's scary that even now when I have a tooth that literally broke inside my mouth if it will cause an infection or not. You know people in poverty, without insurance, don't get bumped up. We aren't given the privileged of anything being an emergency even if we work just as hard as the man who makes millions.
